Read more →There are plenty of things in life that we can't control. The weather. Getting older. Traffic. Whether your favorite restaurant stays in business.
Voting isn't one of those things.
People sometimes tell me that one vote doesn't matter. History has shown otherwise. Elections have been decided by surprisingly small numbers of votes. Even when they aren't, every vote is part of the message a country sends to itself.
Democracy only works when people participate. It isn't something we inherit forever. Every generation has to protect it.
That also means resisting attempts to make voting harder or convincing people that their vote doesn't count. Cynicism is easy. Participation takes effort.
You don't have to agree with your neighbors. You don't have to agree with me. That's the point.
Just vote.
The title probably sounds backwards because it is.
For thousands of years, people have tried to explain the unknown. Before we understood lightning, disease, earthquakes, or the stars, supernatural explanations filled the gaps. That wasn't because people were foolish. They simply worked with the knowledge they had.
As science expanded, many of those mysteries disappeared. We learned that curiosity, observation, and evidence often provide better answers than tradition alone.
I find science fascinating because it constantly tests itself. Ideas survive because they withstand evidence, not because they've been repeated for centuries.
That doesn't mean everyone has to abandon their beliefs. It simply means we should never stop asking questions.
To me, asking difficult questions isn't disrespectful. It's one of the best things the human mind can do.
Most environmental problems feel overwhelming.
Climate change. Pollution. Plastic in the oceans.
It's easy to look at problems that large and think there's nothing one person can do.
Recycling isn't a complete solution, but it's one of the simplest habits we can develop. A few extra seconds sorting a bottle, a can, or a cardboard box may not seem important, but millions of people making the same choice adds up.
Even better is reducing what we buy in the first place and finding ways to reuse what we already have.
I've always believed that small improvements made consistently often beat grand plans that never happen.
The planet isn't going anywhere.
The question is what kind of planet we'll leave for our grandchildren.
People are often surprised when I tell them I enjoy writing software on an Android tablet.
Most developers picture multiple monitors, mechanical keyboards, and powerful desktop computers. Those are great, but they're not the only way to build software.
DroidScript lets me experiment almost anywhere. If I have an idea while sitting on the couch or traveling, I can start writing code immediately.
Is it perfect? Of course not.
But I've learned that simple tools often encourage creativity. When you're not spending all your time configuring an environment, you spend more time solving problems.
I still use more traditional development tools when a project gets larger, but DroidScript remains one of my favorite ways to prototype ideas quickly.
Sometimes the best development environment is simply the one that's with you when inspiration strikes.
